Boil the potatoes until soft enough to mash. Cool. Microwave the rutabaga for 15 minutes, peel, and then cut up unto cubes. Boil if still too hard to mash. Peel the garlic and cube the cabbage. Boil until just soft.
Mash the potatoes and rutabaga together.
Lightly saute the onions in the butter and stir into the potatoes. Add the garlic and cabbage. Season with salt and pepper.
Pour into a casserole dish and dot with butter. Bake for 35-45 minutes.
Tradition had the cook add a coin, a button, a thimble, and a gold ring to this dish at Samhain. The person who finds the coin is bound for wealth and riches. The person who finds the button will have a year of privacy and meditation. The person who finds the thimble will be caring for others this year. The finder of the ring is in for a year of romance.
